When it comes to air travel, Africa is growing very fast, and having some of the top tourist destinations in the world means that there will always be many tourists visiting the continent throughout the year, which keeps majority of our airports very busy.

It is important to note that the growth of air travel in Africa has risen a notch higher than it was decades back. Several countries are now more stable than they were before creating the need for well-developed structures that can facilitate travel through and out of the country.

There are countries whose structural development has skyrocketed due to so many different factors that affect their economies compared to others that are still lagging behind. In no particular order, here are some of the busiest airports on the continent.

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport
The busiest airport in East Africa racks in an estimated five million passengers coming and going through its terminals every year. JKIA is located in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, the leading business hub in East and Central Africa.

Marrakech Menara Airport
Located in Marrakech, the capital city of Morocco, the airport serves international passengers especially from the neighbouring Arab countries and Casablanca, one of the biggest cities in North Africa. The number of passengers who used the airport during 2014 was estimated to be over five million.

OR Tambo International Airport
Formally known as Johannesburg International Airport, this one is located in Johannesburg, South Africa, and is the largest and biggest airport in Africa with an estimated 28 million passengers passing through its doors in a year. The airport has six terminals serving several non-stop international and domestic flights.

Murtala Muhammed International Airport
This airport is said to handle an estimate of six million passengers and is the biggest in the region. The airport is located in Lagos, which is easily mistaken to be the capital city of Nigeria due to its commercial strength in the country.

Cairo International Airport
Ranked as the second busiest airport in Africa after OR Tambo, this one handles an estimated 16 million passengers in a year. Located in Cairo, Egypt, the airport is also ranked among the most beautiful in Africa.

Carthage International Airport
Carthage International Airport is named after the city of Carthage, which lies east of the airport. It serves over four million passengers per year — both international and domestic.

Mohammed V International Airport
An estimated seven million passengers pass through this airport and it is ranked among the top ten well-designed airports with good services in Africa. The airport is located in the city of Casablanca in Morocco.

Hurghada International Airport
Located inland south-west of the city where it derives its name, the airport serves over five million travellers per year. It is located in Egypt.

Houari Boumediene Airport
Sometimes referred to as Algiers Airport by Algerians, the airport serves over six million passengers annually.

Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport
This international airport serves over six million people per year and is located in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria.
