Sex Okra and Butter

Dir. Mahamat-Saleh Haroun

An entertaining and moving insight into the lives of a Malian family in Bordeaux, France. The cranky older husband Malik is left by his beautiful younger wife Hortense to bring up their two young children in a cramped HLM apartment in the city. While Hortense escapes to continue her romantic affair with a French oyster farmer, Malik remains in denial about her departure and dreams of returning home to Mali.

Featuring fantastic comedic and genuinely moving performances, this film is at once politically relevant and hugely funny. Those who have witnessed the gripping emotional drama of Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s film Daratt may be pleasantly surprised to see the director’s skill in creating such an enjoyable comic story.
