Ravneet Chadha’s Subira is Kenya’s entry to the US Academy Awards 2020 in the Best Foreign Language Film category Award.
Kenya started being an interested party in the Academy Awards in the US when Nairobi Half Life became the first entry in 2012. Since then, entries from the East African nation have included Kati Kati in 2017 and Supamodo in 2018. While these entries have been received by the Oscar team, none have yet qualified for the awards just yet.
The entry for the 2019 edition of the Oscars, revealed by the Oscars Selection Committee Kenya on September 20, is Ravneet Chadha’s Subira.
“After consideration of all the points and the strengths and weaknesses of all two film entries, the Oscars Selection Committee Kenya hereby confirms that it has selected Subira as the Kenyan submission to the 92nd Academy Awards (Oscars) in the category of Best International Feature Film Award,” read the statement from the committee.
Subira won the best feature film at the Kalasha Awards 2018 and scooped with it the Best Director in a Film (Ravneet Sippy Chadha) as well as the Best Actress in a Film (Brenda Wairimu).
