Swati Thiyagarajan Biography
Swati Thiyagarajan is an international award winning conservation journalist. She began her television career with NDTV, Asia’s largest and number one private English news channel, in 1997. She has travelled and reported live news from around the world and anchored news and feature shows.
In 2001 she started her own show on NDTV called Born Wild, a half hour documentary news feature style wildlife conservation show. Swati journeyed around India reporting on conservation issues such as the decline in the number of India’s tiger, the man elephant conflict with elephants and leopards, India’s disappearing bio diversity, the need for indigenous communities to be involved in conservation programmes and climate change.
She is heavily involved in all aspects of the show in the role of researcher, script writer, director as well as presenter. Born Wild is currently in its ninth season and with an audience of over 5 million people, it is one of the highest rated television shows in Asia. She has twice won India’s equivalent to the Pulitzer Prize, the Ramnath Goenka Award and was awarded the Earth hero award for her work in conservation, and the Carl Ziess Award for her reports on tiger conservation. In 2006 Swati was invited to join the judging panel at the prestigious Wildscreen Film Festival and last year, was invited to be a judge at Wild Talk Africa.
She currently lives in South Africa and works as a freelancer. She produced the 13-part conservation series Wild Walk with award winning South African producers the Foster Brothers, for NHU Africa. The India version of the series titled Born Wild, Out of Africa was awarded the best TT mini-series by the Indian Television Academy. She is currently producing a film on Interspecies Communication with Foster Brothers Films featuring animal communicator Anna Breytenbach, for NHU Africa.
