Ghana/2011/producers: Richard Cook and Mike Nolan

Ghana’s Black Gold tells the story of Ghana’s journey to becoming an oil superpower.

Told from the perspective of three Ghanaians and with contributions from the key people who made the oil dream a reality, this documentary is set against the backdrop of a developing country coming to terms with the fact that a massive natural resource has been discovered on its doorstep.

State of the art equipment arrives in the area to produce the oil as the time for first oil production moves ever closer. Debates persist throughout Ghana between those who think that the discovery can only be a good thing for a developing country and those who believe it’s destined to be a curse. After all, Africa’s record for oil production benefiting the people of the countries where it’s discovered isn’t strong. Can Ghana buck the trend?

With unprecedented access to the men and amazing machines at the heart of Ghana’s fledgling oil industry, Ghana’s Black Gold is there at a exciting turning point in Ghana’s history.

It’s a hot topic and one that raises considerable passion but there’s an insistence that Ghana will learn the lessons of other African countries and will not allow corruption or environmental issues to blight their newly discovered natural resources.

Watch Ghana’s Black Gold and you decide if they’re right.
